What Is Bushido?

Bushido (武士道) literally means 'the way of the warrior.' But 'warrior' here is not a physical description. It is a description of someone who has accepted a code — who has decided that their behavior will be governed by something beyond immediate self-interest.

The classical Bushido code is organized around seven virtues: Rectitude (義 / gi), Courage (勇 / yū), Benevolence (仁 / jin), Respect (礼 / rei), Honesty (誠 / makoto), Honor (名誉 / meiyo), and Loyalty (忠義 / chūgi).

The most valuable parts of Bushido for modern leaders are not the martial aspects — they are the character aspects.

Rectitude: Making the right decision even when the easier path exists. Benevolence: Using power to serve rather than to accumulate. Honesty: Saying difficult truths rather than comfortable ones. Loyalty: Staying committed through difficulty rather than only in the easy seasons.

These are not historical concepts. They are the exact qualities that distinguish leaders who are remembered from those who are merely successful.
